In a recent study, researchers in the New Jersey State University School of Medicine demonstrated that prescription-only Nexium was significantly more effective than a non-prescription version, a widely used heartburn medication.
“Our findings provide strong evidence that a prescription-only drug is more effective than a non-prescription drug for treating chronic heartburn,” said senior author Dr. Richard C. Stahl, M. D., Ph. D.
Nexium was the only approved non-prescription Nexium for treating chronic heartburn in the United States, according to the researchers, who led the study.
“This study provides a clear and compelling evidence that prescription-only Nexium is as effective as a non-prescription version of this medication,” said lead author Dr.
Researchers found that a non-prescription version of the drug was slightly more effective than the prescription-only drug.
“This may be due to the fact that these patients have not been able to access the medication and are taking it on prescription, which may not be an effective alternative,” said Stahl, who led the study in his department.
Nexium is available in the U. S. and is considered a “safe alternative to prescription drugs,” he added.
In 2017, the FDA approved NEXIUM (esomeprazole magnesium), a generic version of Nexium. The drug was also approved by the FDA in 2022. Nexium is also prescribed to treat symptoms associated with chronic heartburn, such as painful, persistent or recurrent heartburn.
The study showed that Nexium was significantly more effective than other non-prescription esomeprazole and omeprazole forms of omeprazole, with similar effectiveness in treating heartburn that occurred in patients who took Nexium or similar drugs.
The researchers also showed that in this study, patients taking Nexium were less likely to have heartburn at any one time. They also found that patients taking Nexium were more likely to have other chronic heartburn symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing or pain in the throat, than those taking omeprazole. The study also found that patients taking Nexium were more likely to have heartburn more frequently.
“We are continuing our study to investigate the long-term safety of this medication and are planning to continue this study in the future,” Stahl said.
